  1. RAFE GODFREY  02/04/2003 / 11:16 am

If you’ve been back to Charleston recently, you know that this is something that it now lacks, which is a shame, esp. for the high school kids. Well, hopefully I’ll see you all in June.

  2. EYE[SIC]  02/05/2003 / 3:28 pm

man, jeremy just sent this site to me. this is fucking awesome. i have so many good memories of the scene. i used to be in skybound- starman super before that- with the godfrey below, and we put in some frantic and tremendous hours. …so many long nights, going to shows at the pit in the back of cune’s dad’s truck with the members of richard’s anger, talking bullshit and trying to keep the amps from falling on us. sometimes we’d go to that italian restaurant and try to shake gumballs out of the machine. one time before a show greg lutz bought a record at catsback (sp?) and tried to break it over his head onstage. it wouldn’t snap, so he just threw it into the crowd and said, ‘that’s why vinyl is the shit, man.’ then someone threw it back on stage and hit him in the forehead. the whole thing was really pretty unique; i don’t know if there’s ever been a scene quite like that. a reunion is a great idea! sorry i’m going to miss it- i’m going to be in uganda with the peacecorps- but y’all should take some pictures and post them. good luck!

  3. CHRIS ELLIS. 02/19/2003 / 3:28 pm

  6. DANA  02/23/2003 / 3:31 pm

Actually, Rafe, you’re just not looking the right places. There is still a great music scene in the Charleston area, and even HUNTINGTON now, believe it or not. Believe me, it’s not as good as it was back then when 300+ people would show up on any given night, but it’s still great. The weird thing about it now is that there are quite a few people booking shows, and there are honestly too many. At any rate, it’s still a lot of fun and I still go to shows constantly, as well as book them.

  7. BRIAN PENNINGTON  02/24/2003 / 6:21 pm

Hey, this is a really really great idea guys. I passed the word onto some folks. Paul Weaver and Steve Jarrell and I are always having these drawn out sessions about how great our all-ages scene was when we were in high school, and it makes me feel like an old man but I love it. I never played in any bands back in the day (except for a one-time appearance on saxophone with the Pu’Rens) but I used to love going to shows. It’s totally true that we picked our friends from shows and high school was forced on us. I’m looking forward to this more than I would any high school reunion. Are any bands reuniting for the event? I heard whispers of a Dirt Bear reunion show…?

  8. BRIAN JARRETT  03/08/2003 / 10:22 am

The reunion date has been set for Saturday, June 14, 2003. Pass the word along!

  9. SHANE PARSONS  03/09/2003 / 12:57 pm

Hey this is Shane, I was in Trout and still playing with the infamous Freak Tent. This is a cool idea! I am not going to my High School reunion, because this is my real high school reunion. I can’t wait to see everyone.

  10. BRIAN SPANGLER  03/09/2003 / 3:39 pm

Hey everyone. This is brian from Seven. I have been down in TN for a few years and have been playing in a band called Julius Seizure. I cant wait to see everyone at the reunion. It’s going to be a lot of fun seeing how everyone has changed. Whatever happened to joey clagg?? haha drop me an email sometime. word up

  11. DANIEL SUSLA  03/12/2003 / 5:25 pm

Damn**&%$^%, Falooda guy & WV ex-pat who moved to Indiana with Jeremy Brightbill to start a label. Label’s still functioning and I’m living in Bkln, NY. Anyone ever need a place to crash while visiting NY get in touch. I’ll do my best to make it. I’ll drag abdulla down 2. Someone asked about J. clagg. I know he was working for Lumberjack Distribution in Ohio but that info may be dated.

  12. SHAWN BECKNER  03/16/2003 / 1:17 am

come on guys. the scene isn’t dead at all, its just changed. me, andy masker, steve barker represent trout, dirt bear, and big daddy stick everytime we play. freak tent and noise box are better than ever. i’ve heard that shindig is real tight, too. fud is old-school punk at its best. brian, don’t worry about not having a show at coonskin. you’ve done a good thing with this site. if anybody is interested in playing later that night in Charleston i’m sure it could be arranged, and we wouldn’t have to pay a thing. maybe we could have a big jam session? we’re not old yet.

  13. DANA  05/30/2003 / 11:27 am

Hey everyone. I know there were a lot of FUDGE TUNNEL fans in our group of friends, so I wanted to pass some info along. I’m reviewing a CD right now that is ALEX NEWPORT’s new project, Theory Of Ruin. It’s different, but interesting. If you want to check it out, go to http://www.theoryofruin.com and http://www.escapeartistrecords.com . I’ll see you all soon!

  14. DANA  06/15/2003 / 7:59 pm

Wow. I was really bummed out that so many of the people that said they were coming didn’t come. It was good to see everyone that was there though, even though I honestly didn’t recognize a few of you at first (Adam being the main person I didn’t recognize. Sorry!) On a side note, that show I was telling you all that we were playing yesterday evening was great! Not a bad variety of music either; stoner rock, hardcore and metal. Good times.

  15. PAIGE SPEARS  06/17/2003 / 2:34 pm

I just wanted to say that I was really happy that i made it out on saturday. It put me at ease to see all those familiar faces. Brian, please dont be so quick to rule out another one. 16. JOSEPH CLAGG  06/23/2003 / 2:50 pm

Bank opened at 9am and it was a 5 hour drive, soo….. Anyway, you should put up a list of those who actually did make it and any photos you got. I’d like to see what I missed, because I really did wanna be there.

  31. BRIAN PAULEY  06/21/2005 / 7:05 pm

Hey Brian, long time no see. Again I apologize for not making the Nitro Reunion. As for what I’ve been into since back in the day….

After Dirt Bear, I immediately joined a band called Shindig with Ronnie Stricklen, Ray Davis, & Richard Ray. We recorded a few cd’s here and there, then went thru some changes. A different version of Shindig (myself, Richard, & Derek Reese) played some dates on the 2000 Warped Tour over on the 2nd stage which was a blast. After that, I quit Shindig and just kinda hung out for a while.

In August of 2002, I married Kelly Joseph from Teays Valley and inherited a stepdaughter named Jada (who’s 6 now). In September of 2004, we had a baby girl named Laci Morgan Pauley. We still live on the Elk River getting ready to build a house in the Mallory area of South Charleston.

Since Shindig, I really haven’t played music that much. Maybe a time or two in the old Cave with Ronnie & Ray, but nothing more. About a year or so ago, Dana White asked me to fill in on drums for his band, Holden Caulfield, for a couple of shows. Their drummer got shipped to Iraq for the war. Playing those shows reminded me of how old I am. Haha. The scene has definitely changed since we played.

I think you would be surprised on how many kids had older brothers or sisters who told them about back in the day. And the bands around here today definitely remember and seem to be respectful for the groundwork bands like Flood, Dirt Bear, Dead Ant Farm, Seven, Trout, etc etc put together to create such a strong music scene around here. I felt like the old man telling the kids how it used to be. Haha.

Anyhow….nowadays I’m just working for Carefirst, INC which is Blue Cross/Blue Shield and officiating football games (from high school to midget league).

That’s about it for me. Take care and keep in touch.

    Brian

  32. ADAM MARSHALL  06/22/2005 / 4:33 pm

Hi Jarrett, sorry I split before the cops threw you out of coonskin.

Hello Pauley, how the hell are you? I haven’t you since Barry’s wedding, I guess. Fox asked me to say hello to both of you, and wanted to know what’s been going on. He moved back to his parent’s house a few months back. He’s tired of landscaping. He auditioned to be Byzantines new base player, but I gather he did not do as well as he should have. So he moved back. I think he’s going to be a coal miner.

I finally managed to get my own suitable for framing sheet of official higher education paper. Turns out the thing doesn’t do anything special, even though it cost me as much as a nice family sedan. I being unemployed at the moment, as I just can’t find a job that I really want that has the pay and benefits I need, and the jobs I like don’t pay much at all. I am weighing options. I’m certified to teach English as a second language, so I might go to Japan for a few years, or maybe I’ll try to stay in WV, because this is the place to be if youre smart and free. Just like me. Also, My doctor inform me of this: if you join the Peace corps, they pay off some of your student loans each year, you can choose your country, and Jamaica, Micronesia, and Samoa are available, and there’s a good chance of landing a $100K+/year jerk-off government research job if you have 3 or 4 years of the Peace Corps on your resume. Also, the coal industry is definitely on the plate too. Damn, it was good enough for my dumbass dad, and now he make $120K a year fixing coal mine machines.

I really wish I didn’t have to get a career, go back to drinking all day. I should’ve trained to become a badass fighter, like Dexter. That’s a cool job.

Uh, what else? My gay little sister had a wedding or commitment ceremony, whatever, this past fall. I had to give her away because my parents did not come. I didn’t even know there was a chapel that would do that sort of thing in WV, but my sister probably tapped the dyke grapevine or something. It was all kinda weird. Zack Humphreys brought his mom and step dad. At the after party Zack, my youngest cousin Aaron, and I drank ourselves stupid. Aaron announced in a loud slurred voice to everyone that if his cousin could marry a fellow girl, he felt it was 100% fine for a 17 year old him to get shitfaced in front of a bunch of old people who he doesn’t know. Then he said if anyone had a problem with his blue dreadlocks, they could fuck off. God I love that boy. I wish you guys could meet him; he’s crazier than the craziest parts Barry, Kelly, Dana, and I all rolled into one. Hell of a guy, a true Lyons.

Ok, uh…. Barry is still in the sand. Not sure when he’ll be back again, but I feel like shit because the last time he was in I neglected to even stop by and see him. His daughter is cute. Kelly’s son is quite large for 5 or however old he is now. I guess it would be more surprising if he was small, but I actually think he may turn out even bigger than Jonathan Kelly was. He looks exactly like my good old cousin, god rest his soul. He still can’t remember my damn name for more than 10 minute, though

Oh, and Barry and Kelly’s mom had an aneurysm in her brain last week. I didn’t think it was serious, but mom says they think there may be permanent brain damage. Right now I guess she slurs all her speech and can’t walk very well, and has to have someone take her up stairs. Mom told me to call Barney to tell him, but I lost his number, so please give to me as soon as you can, Brian, if its not too much to ask.

Tommy Hess is married to one of my sister’s old friends, a huge bitch of a girl named Nicole. If you happen to read this, Tom (assuming Nicole hasn’t smashed you PC lately), sorry, but get a divorce, your too nice to have to suffer for the sins of all humanity. Look, even my Dad, who never comments on anyone I know and told me once he only started to love me when I was 23, said the same thing last time I mentioned you. Anyway, Tom’s working at his family’s hardware place again.

Oh, and speaking of the younger generation knowing of the Nitro Scene, Aaron made CD copies of most of my old tapes (dirt Bear, Flood, even Provos for god’s sake), and a copy of that comp cd, and he makes everyone that comes to his house listen. Between you and me, he likes Dirt Bear the most by far. Sorry Jarrett. I heard Dead Ant Farm (not sure which incarnation) played a reunion show not too far back, but I don’t where, and, sadly, I’m sure it wasn’t a sellout.

One thing bothers me. When I run into people from back in the day, most don’t even remember me, which sucks, cause I design and pasted so many of the flyer, carried equipment at every show, help Shawn when he wrote most of the beginnings of his songs, sacrificed my childhood teddy bear to the crowd at that one show, shared all my pot and booze, and broke Skeleton Boy’s nose twice (and I high kicked him in mouth once, thought I broke his jaw. And to think Greg always liked me when I did all that stuff on purpose.) Last time I saw Tovah she had no idea who I was, and I spent 90% with her boyfriend’s sister for years. Hell, I helped move her into that shitty little apartment she had for a while, and shared lots of drugs with her all the time. She had no recollection at all. Sucks. All the guys from Hoover I used to get in fights with and hate remember me, and come up like we’re old friends. Sigh. I’m so bitter and sad…. I must not have talked much back then, because nobody I meet forgets me these days. I can’t shut up. Who cares anyway? Most of those people suck, especially compared to me.

I’ve got only good memories of all those tiny, dirty little shows, watching my fellow Elk River bastards play cool music; glad I was there for it all. (Especially the one where those guys from Nitro, I forget the name of their band, thought they could make Kelly and Barry give drunkass Bill his keys back. Funniest shit I ever saw. I think was you, Pauley, who softly clued those guys in about what they where getting into. You should be proud; you may have saved some lives there. I could barely hold the laughter the entire time. Also, it was great when Medley got the clap at the farm show. Bill proved he was above all else a professional at all times, if you what I mean, which don’t, but trust me, its extremely funny. I mean, the important thing is _I_ think I’m funny… Now the only exciting thing about the Elk River area is how in the last year we beat everyone but Wichita, Kansas in crystal meth production. There was something I got from those shows that I’ve never get from any concert I’ve been to since.

Except maybe the first time I saw Bad Religion and when I saw NOFX, but I was really looking forward to those shows.

    Everyone keep makin’ the scene…..

    …..wearing acid wash jeans…..

    …..eating magic beans…..

    …..with a gangsta lean?

Wow, Im really tired, and I appear to be rambling and typing nonsense. Brian, please try and send me that number soon.
Pauley, you should call Mr. Fox sometime.

    Bye.

  33. BRIAN PAULEY  06/24/2005 / 12:13 am

Hey Adam, good hearing from ya. Sorry to hear that about Janet. Hope she is doing ok, now.

If Shaun doesn’t mind, send me his phone number thru private message or something.

By the way…that was one of the funniest posts catching me up on everyone that I’ve ever read. Good stuff.

  35. TSTEFAN  11/05/2006 / 7:58 pm

“History does not record anywhere at any time a religion that has a rational basis. religion is a crutch for people not strong enough to stand up to the unknown without help. But, like dandruff, most people do have a religion and spend time and money on it and seem to derive considerable pleasure from fiddling with it.”

  36. NATHAN HOLDER  05/05/2007 / 7:57 am

  39. JAMES JARRETT  02/18/2009 / 10:51 pm

Well, for anyone hunting their geneology, I suppose it stands to reason that I would run across another Jarrett. What I find interesting is that you are in Missouri and someone I don’t know is hunting a James Jarrett born in 1804, maybe in MO. I’ll be reading your site and checking things out. Take care. J.
